EXPLORATION (Researching and Gathering Information) As a result of conducting self-assessment, careers and majors may emerge as good fits for you. You may then ask, "What can I do with a major in…?" or, "How do I become a…?" To further evaluate your options and help decision-making toward choosing a major, use this exploration stage to research thoroughly those careers and academic programs that interest you. CONSIDER:
RESOURCES THAT CAN BE HELPFUL: Economic and Industry Employment Trends – Review economic growth trends and learn about an occupation’s working conditions, educational requirements, salary ranges, and advancement opportunities. This information can be obtained from the following:
Informational Interviews – Meet with working professionals to learn first hand about careers, qualifications, advancement potential, internships and/or volunteer opportunities. Company Recruiters – Investigate career opportunities with companies that participate in special events such as Career Fairs and information sessions. Career Counselors and Advisors – Discuss career exploration with a Career Services Center counselor. Clarify requirements for majors and other academic programs with advisors in the Academic Advising Center as well as in academic departments. Career Center Library – An extensive reference library can be utilized to expand your knowledge about majors and occupations. Resources include:
