Professional Attire For Interviews
Back | Home | WWU Home

A job interview isn’t the time to make an individual fashion statement.  Whether you are interviewing with a trendy advertising agency, a school district, or for an internship or seasonal job, it is wise to stick to conservative attire. Make sure that your clothing, grooming and accessories project a professional image.

Women

Ü      A conservative knee length dress or suit is most appropriate.  Colors like black and navy are good choices.  Pantsuits can be acceptable if the style is professional and conservative.

Ü      Hose should never be darker than your hemline.  A neutral flesh tone always works well.  Take an extra pair for emergencies.

Ü      Keep accessories to a minimum and stick with natural toned makeup.  One pierced earring per ear (no multiples) is fine; remove all other body piercings.

Ü      Avoid strongly scented perfumes and hair spray; they can be overpowering in a small interview room.

Men

Ü      A dark suit is a good choice for business organizations.  A conservative jacket or blazer with tailored slacks can also be appropriate.

Ü      A neatly ironed long-sleeved shirt is preferred; when in doubt, white is always a safe color choice.

Ü      Avoid flashy ties in loud colors; a subtle design is most suitable.

Ü      Keep jewelry to a minimum.  Remove piercings.

Ü      Black shoes with color coordinated socks are recommended.

Ü      Hair should be neatly groomed.  Avoid strongly scented aftershaves;  they can be overpowering in a small interview room.
