The “Principles for Professional Conduct” developed by the National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE), provide three basic precepts to guide career services and recruitment professionals:
- Maintain an open and free selection of employment opportunities in an atmosphere conducive to objective thought, where job candidates can choose optimum long-term uses of their talents that are consistent with personal objectives and all relevant facts.
- Maintain a recruitment process that is fair and equitable to candidates and employing organizations.
- Support informed and responsible decision making by candidates.
The services and programs of Western Washington University’s Career Services Center have been developed in accordance to the NACE principles to assist employers in their recruitment of qualified personnel and provide students and alumni with opportunities to explore internship and career options. Employers using services and/or facilities of the Center for campus interviewing, employment listings, candidate referral, career fairs and/or information group meetings are expected to follow the guidelines set out below:
- It is expected that employers will interact with students, alumni and Center staff in a professional and ethical manner. This includes providing complete and accurate information concerning conditions of employment with their organization. Employers must meet the following requirements in order to be eligible to use the Center’s services and/or facilities:
- All employers must abide by Equal Opportunity Employment and Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. Discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender age, disability, marital status or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran in prohibited by federal and state statutes. Further, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited by University policy and Governor’s Executive Order. Questions used in interviews and information requested in employment applications should be directly related to job duties. For participation in on-campus recruiting, career fairs, candidate referral or posting of employment opportunities, recruiters must affirm compliance with this policy in writing when requested.
- Employers must recruit for positions within their own or legally affiliated organizations. Organizations recruiting for positions which require applicants to purchase a franchise will not be allowed access to services. If a third party employment agency is being used or if the employer is serving in the capacity of a third party employment agency, the Center’s “Third Party Employment Services User Policy” must be followed.
- Those employers requiring candidates to invest, purchase supplies or pay a fee as a condition of employment, must clearly state the cost and provide a written explanation of the cost in written materials describing the company’s employment opportunities, including job announcements. This information must be clearly disclosed when speaking with candidates. If an employer does not comply, privileges to use the Center for recruiting will be jeopardized.
- It is expected that employers using the Center’s services will offer regular salaries for positions. However, employers offering commission-based positions may use the Center if they are recruiting for positions that are full-time career jobs and if they inform the Center and candidates of the specific manner in which remuneration will be determined.
- Certain employers will not be allowed to recruit through the Center:
- Employers who fail to meet the conditions of the User Policy for Employers.
- Employers who are involved in strikes and are hiring for positions included in affected bargaining units.
- Employers which have been judged by a court of law to be engaged in illegal activities.
Any reported breach of any part of this policy will result in the termination of all future opportunities to recruit WWU students and alumni through the Career Services Center. |
